Six bridges, under an hour
Out from Ribeira or the Gaia quay, under all six crossings and back. Cheap, constant, and the fastest way to understand how the city is stacked.
A sailboat, the light, a glass in hand

The Douro is two hours east and worth the whole day.
Demarcated in 1756, the oldest protected wine region anywhere, and still terraced by hand. Most days out pair two quintas with lunch and a stretch on the river between Pinhão and Régua. Go on a weekday if you can — the roads above Peso da Régua are single file.

Tiled churches and river cruises exist everywhere. Aged tawny, hand-painted azulejo and a bookshop with a ticket office do not.
The Lodges
Port is fortified in the valley and then brought down to Vila Nova de Gaia to age, because the cooler, damper air off the river estuary suits a barrel better than the baking terraces do. That is the whole reason the lodges line the south bank. Tastings usually run white, tawny and ruby; the tawnies are where the ten, twenty and forty-year bottles start, and where the price of the tour stops mattering.

Azulejo
The blue-and-white tile fronts are not decoration bolted on later — glazed tile is how this city waterproofed its buildings, and the twenty thousand panels inside São Bento station are a nineteenth-century advert for the technique. A workshop puts a brush and a blank tile in front of you for a couple of hours. Nobody paints a good one first time, and you take it home anyway.

This is the wettest big city in Portugal — roughly 1,250mm a year, most of it between November and March, and it arrives sideways off the Atlantic. None of the good indoor answers are compromises: a lodge tasting, a tile bench, a pastel de nata worth burning your fingers on, a fado room with the door shut.
